Adjusting Your Thermostat for Cooler Weather

A white digital thermostat is mounted on a brick wall.

One of the many perks of living in Orlando is that we don’t really have winter weather — at least not compared to the rest of the country. But that doesn’t mean our temperatures don’t drop a little bit during the “winter” months. That being the case, you should be adjusting your thermostat for cooler weather to keep your energy bills low.

Adjusting your thermostat for cooler weather

When it comes to adjusting your thermostat, a basic rule of thumb is: the closer the indoor temperature is to the outdoor temperature, the lower your energy bills will be — since your HVAC system doesn’t have to work that hard to make up the difference. In Orlando, you obviously don’t want the inside of your home to be in the 80s, but you don’t want to feel cold either — you live in Florida to avoid the cold.

There are a few things that affect how you should adjust your thermostat.

Your comfort

This is usually the main concern. If you are someone that likes to feel toasty year-round, having your thermostat set to around 72℉ should be fine in the winter. However, if you don’t mind just putting on a sweatshirt inside, you should aim to set your thermostat a bit lower, say to 68℉.

Your HVAC’s efficiency

The older or more worn down your unit is, the less efficient it will be. That means that, in order to avoid sky-high energy bills, you should try to adjust your thermostat to be closer to the outdoor temperature. If you have a newer, more taken care of, more efficient HVAC unit, you should be fine creating a wider difference between the two temperatures.
