You’ve probably heard time and time again that gas leaks are some of the most dangerous things that could happen in your home. The problem is, though, that not all gas leaks are detectable — if fact, most of them aren’t.
Luckily, there are a few things that can alert you if you have a gas leak in your home.
Scary Signs You Have a Gas Leak
Dead Plants
While not all of us have a particularly green thumb, if all of your houseplants seem to suddenly die on you, you may have a gas leak. Just like it’s unsafe for our bodies to breathe in natural gas or carbon monoxide, plants can’t either. The gas will cause them to die if they keep breathing it in.
You may also notice random patches of dead grass or shrubbery in your yard. This can be a sign that you have a gas leak outside your home, so you should call your local utility company to handle it.
Rotten Egg Smell
This is one of the more noticeable signs of a gas leak. Utility companies will add agents to natural gas so you can more easily detect it if you have a gas leak. If it’s seeping into your home, you’ll likely notice a sulfur or rotten egg smell.
Hissing Sound
If a gas leak is coming from one of your appliances, commonly your gas stove, you will probably hear a faint hissing sound coming from the spot gas is escaping. Sometimes these leaks are caused by someone accidentally turning the knob on your stove, but other times the gas line itself is the cause of the problem.
Health Issues
If you don’t notice a gas leak soon enough, you could start to experience health issues such as:
- Lightheadedness
- Headaches
- Fatigue
- Nausea
- Chest Pain
- Flu-like Symptoms
