Bathroom Remodels for Senior Safety

Bathroom Safety Bar

Your parents took care of you from the time you were born, potentially still to this day. So it’s no surprise that once they’ve reached a certain age, you’d want to take care of them as well. If you have an older relative living with you, one of the first things you want to do is remodel your bathroom for senior safety. These are just some of the steps you can take to ensure your senior stays unharmed.

Make a Bathroom on the Ground Fall

If you don’t already have one, invest in making a bathroom on the first floor of your home. This makes a big difference in how your elderly loved ones get to the bathroom in the first place, since it keeps them from having to climb stairs which can be both painful and dangerous to them.

Install a Sitting Shower

Especially if they have arthritis and/or limited mobility, it can be very difficult to move in and out of a tub. Plus, they could easily slip and fall in a regular tub. It’s best to swap out your current setup for a shower that has a built-in door and seat. This gives seniors an easier time showering and reduces their risk of injury.

Install Grab Bars

Instability is a common issue for seniors, so help them out by install grab bars in your shower, around the toilet, and near the sink. This gives them something to hold onto and helps them support themselves while they move around the bathroom.

Lay Down Skid Mats

Tile can be slippery, especially if it’s covered with a fuzzy bath mat. Lay down non-slip mats all over your bathroom and in your tub to reduce the risk of falling.
