We’re no strangers to heat in Florida — which is why we have our AC’s running high during the really warm months. But if you’re AC is going strong and it still feels hotter than Hades when you walk upstairs, there’s something very wrong.

Even though heat rises, if your second floor is boiling, there are a few culprits that could be causing the problem.

Hot roof

It’s often best to have a roof that reflects sunlight so your home doesn’t absorb too much (if any) heat. But if your roof is made of a material that absorbs sunlight, all that heat can spread to the rest of your home and counteract your AC’s efforts. It may be worth it to consider changing your roofing materials.

Poorly insulated attic

As the hot Florida sun beats down on your home, your attic starts to absorb some of that heat. And if your attic is poorly insulated, or not insulated at all, that hot air can start to seep into your home and make your second floor extremely warm. Adding some better attic insulation should help keep that warm air contained in your attic and out of your home.

Blocked or damaged ductwork

If the ductwork guiding air to your second floor is damaged and allowing air leaks or full of dust that could impede airflow, you could easily end up with a very hot second floor. It’s important to have your ductwork inspected and cleaned on a regular basis so you can spot these issues before they start to affect your home comfort.
