Common Thermostat Issues
Thermostats are just as temperamental and fallible as any other electrical device, so a practiced hand and problem-solver is required to get the thermostat up and running the way it should.
Some common problems our customers have encountered when dealing with their thermostats and our experienced technicians’ diagnoses and advice are:
No Response from Thermostat
You might have a loose connection if you see no display on your unit and the air conditioner does not turn on. You may also check to see if the unit is dirty. Dust, spiderwebs, and other debris can coat the inside of the unit and cause similar issues with the electrical and mechanical components. Using a dry duster or compressed air to remove the debris without getting the thermostat wet could be all you need to do.
AC Is On But Cannot Maintain the Desired Temperature
Most often, this problem arises from the poor positioning of your thermostat. We usually recommend installing thermostats on the inner walls, away from all doors, windows, and vents. Doors and windows can cause drafts, and vents can fool the thermostat into believing the room is much hotter or colder than in reality – both scenarios will affect the thermostat's reading. Having a professional move and connect the thermostat elsewhere can solve this problem effectively.

Need a Thermostat Replacement?
Thermostats have an average lifespan of at least ten years. Though many problems like the ones above can be repaired, an old thermostat may be on its last legs if you notice recurrent issues that seem to get worse.
Some signs that you should replace your old thermostat:
- AC unit won’t turn off
- The thermostat doesn’t respond
- Different temperature readings from room to room
- The thermostat only lights up part of the time
- Incredibly high energy bills with no other explanation
- Constant, unexplained temperature changes despite setting the thermostat at a certain temperature explanation
We recommend getting help from our smart, certified thermostat technicians rather than messing around with the wiring yourself. We can quickly address the problem and get your AC running reliably again. If we determine it’s time for a new thermostat, we can help you look for a replacement that fits your needs and budget.
